Brisbane "Supposed to contain coin/REGISTRATION FEE 6D" handstamp

Brisbane post office opened in April 1830

• Supposed to contain coin/REGISTRATION FEE 6D handstamp  on a Chalon rated 5R

This was a handstamp used when coins were posted but not registered. Under postal regulations the sending of coins through the mail was only allowed using registered post, as this extract from the postal regulations of 1885 indicates: "No valuable letter should ever be posted unless registered. Letters containing notes, coin, or cheques should always be registered. Letters supposed to contain notes, coin, or cheques are registered, and the registration fee collected on delivery"

After this letter was posted in Brisbane it was noticed that it contained coins but was not registered. It was therefor compulsorily registered by the Brisbane post office and the "Supposed to contain coin/REGISTRATION FEE 6D." handstamp was applied on the front. Upon arrival in London the 6d registration fee and a 6d fine for not having been registered in the first place was charged as indicated by the manuscript "1/-" annotation on the front.

Brisbane Registered datestamp type 2

• Registered datestamp type 2 (unframed circular datestamp) in RED on a Chalon rated 4R. Dates seen are 13 March 1875 to 5 December 1876

This unframed registered datestamp was in use at Brisbane in the mid-1870s. It consisted of an unframed circle, diameter unknown, reading REGISTERED LETTER OFFICE from the left round the top to the right, BRISBANE at the foot with no stops or other markings in-between. The date was in the centre in two lines, with the month and day over the year in two digits with an indistinct code letter at the top (possibly d). It is not listed by Campbell and has only been seen on cover in red ink that was either originally faintly applied or has since faded

Brisbane Registered datestamp type 1

Brisbane post office opened in April 1830

This was the earliest registered datestamp in use at Brisbane, a framed oval datestamp 33.5 x 26 mm in diameter with the word REGISTERED at top, BRISBANE at bottom and cross stops at each side (type 1) or a diamond at each side (type 1a). The date was in the centre in two lines, with the month and day over the year in full. It was originally in red with no code letter and later in black with a code letter above the date. The only code seen by me is '1', but Campbell also lists a code 'B'

Unfortunately most of the examples on cover are  very faint and, given the size of the datestamp, examples on individual stamps are generally of an incomplete or partial nature. More and better examples need to be seen to more accurately date the periods of use and the frequency and type of code letters. The use of this datestamp extended into the 1st Sideface era with Type 1a probably coming into use after Type 1
