• Registered datestamp type 3 (unframed circular datestamp 23.5 mm in diameter) on a Large Chalon (4 July 1885 to 7 March 1887) rated 4R

This unframed registered datestamp was in use at Brisbane in the mid-1880s. It consists of an unframed circle, 23.5 mm in diameter, reading REGISTERED LETTER OFFICE from the left round the top to the right, BRISBANE at the foot with a fleuron at each side,(or, if indistinct, a big round blob, distinguishable from type 4, which has a full stop, by being thicker or comprising a larger area). In the centre, in three lines, are a code letter, month and day, and the year in two digits. (Campbell type 2 (a), although he appears to have conflated this one with the one I have called Brisbane datestamp type 2.) The code letters are usually fairly indistinct but there appear to be two types and Campbell has listed them as 'a' (sideways) and 'd' (inverted)
